While walking throught the neighborhood, I spotted this Saguaro in bloom, and life became bearable once again. You can see the hole where the woodpeckers did their thing, and where cactus wrens take up residence for incubating eggs. It doesn't hurt the cactus at all.

Oh, I'm so sorry about your mushy cactus...but you are right...who cares, with Saguaro Cactus in your neighborhood! :) I'm jealous!!! Lovely pic!
I don't accept the blame for mature plants that die; afterall, they are adults and can make their own choices. I believe in the terms "failure to thrive" and "sudden plant death". That's my story and I am sticking to it!
